What is a quilt?

Traditionally a quilt was a home made blanket used to cover a bed. In times of no waste, they were necessarily made out of old clothing. Modern quilts may still be blankets, but many are also made to decorate a room or as artful expression.
At its essence, a quilt is a multi-layered textile which is traditionally composed of two or more layers of fabric and a fiber filling. The fabric layers form a sandwich with the filling inside. The layers are stitched together by hand or machine to create a single item. My quilt pieces use wool, cotton or bamboo filling.
Some of my pieces are made using only the surface layer of textile. The work is then stretched over a canvas frame. These are not quilts and are identified as ‘stretched on frame’.
